The Murcian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research and Development (IMIDA) recently organised a dedicated session on the “The Silk Routes: Itinerary, History, Art and Architecture from China to Europe, Reaching the Mediterranean” at the Museum of Science and Water of Murcia, bringing together experts, researchers and cultural representatives to explore the historical and scientific legacy of sericulture.
A central highlight of the event was the presentation of the European ARACNE Project, and how in close collaboration with its European partners, the project has created a Virtual European Silk Route featuring more than 230 points of interest connected to the history, culture and science of silk across the continent. This innovative digital platform provides an accessible and comprehensive way to understand Europe’s sericultural heritage and strengthens cross‑border cooperation in research and cultural preservation.
The programme also featured the participation of Mr José María Chiquillo Barber, International President of the Network of Focal Points of the UNESCO Silk Roads Programme, underscoring the global significance of these initiatives and their contribution to UNESCO’s wider mission of safeguarding shared cultural heritage.
Through this event and within the ARACNE Project, IMIDA reaffirms Europe’s growing role in the revitalisation of the Silk Routes, combining scientific excellence, international collaboration and digital innovation.
