On October 17th, 2024, Manuel Erena Arrabal, in representation of IMIDA, presented »The use of geospatial technologies to recover the cultural heritage of silk in the ARACNE project« at the Esri Spain Conference in Madrid (Spain).
This event provides an opportunity to learn, reconnect and immerse the public in the latest advances in geographic information systems (GIS) technology, to discover the innovative ways they are being used to create a more sustainable and resilient world and to explore the future of GIS capabilities.
The presentation included the uses of these technologies in the Aracne project. The work in progress comprises the digitalisation of historic buildings, scientific equipment on sericulture, objects, photographs and documents that can be seen in the virtual Museum of Silk Science that is being developed. Moreover, the catalogue of the Virtual Museum of Silk Science has 230 inventoried objects, a hundred books and documents and more than 300 historical photographs. Through all this documentation and 14 explanatory panels, visitors will be able to learn about the silk science that was developed at the Sericulture Station of Murcia, the history of this productive sector and how goods were obtained and produced using the silk obtained from the breeding of silkworms.
