On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21, TeleChiara’s agricultural news programme broadcasted a report in which Silvia Cappellozza, responsible of the CREA’s Sericulture Laboratory of Padua presented an overview of the activities of this institution.
These included caring for the mulberry plantation to protect varietal biodiversity, preserving silkworm eggs in estivation/hibernation and pruning mulberry leaves to feed the larvae, in order to safeguard the insect collection. The cycle of the silkworm is actually regulated by the growth of the mulberry tree, which is the silkworm’s only food source and only available during the summer.
The report coincided with the relocation of the small silk reeling machine of D’orica, a partner in the Aracne project, to the Palladian Villa in Piazzola sul Brenta. This was the first regional milestone of the silk cultural itinerary currently under development.
The report also featured an interview with Regional Councillor Giuseppe Pan, who discussed the recently approved law on mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing in Veneto.
