Mulberry trees are living monuments of Europe’s sericulture heritage and enduring symbols of the European Silk Route
For centuries, their leaves supported silkworm rearing and silk production. The sericultural tradition helped conserve a valuable genetic resource that survives today in the form of monumental individual trees, tree rows, and plantations. As part of the European Silk Route exploitation phase, the mulberry inventory aimed to identify, document, and preserve historically important mulberry trees (Morus alba and Morus nigra) across partner countries. Using the Morus App, researchers, schools, and interested people recorded tree locations, basic data, morphological characteristics, and visual documentation. This shared database became the foundation of the Mulberry Story Map “
