“Colourimetric characterization of naturally-coloured cocoons in a silkwormgermplasm collection” publisced in Journal of Insects as Food and Feed

We are pleased to announce the publication of the article “Colourimetric characterization of naturally-coloured cocoons in a silkworm germplasm collection”, authored by Gianni Fila, Massimo Gardiman, Alessio Saviane, Chiara Pavanello, and Silvia Cappellozza.

The study investigates cocoon colour variation in 65 naturally coloured strains of Bombyx mori preserved in the CREA silkworm germplasm collection and reared across three consecutive seasons. Through instrumental colour measurement (CIELAB) and observer-based perceptual analysis, the research identifies CIEDE2000 as the most suitable model for representing perceived colour differences, and defines operational perceptibility thresholds for applied use.

The work further demonstrates that the collection can be organised into seven colour clusters and proposes a standardised, ΔE-based cluster approach for sericulture practice. In addition, it evaluates nomenclature systems and indicates a compact UCL–RHS framework as a practical and reliable option for routine strain colour characterisation.

This publication provides a valuable methodological contribution to the management and enhancement of silkworm genetic resources, with potential applications in textile innovation and in emerging feed/food-related sectors.
